About Susan Bishop

From early childhood Susan Bishop was exposed to beautiful domestic places and to a deep appreciation for well-made objects and workmanship.  At the knees of her mother and maternal grandmother, Susan was exposed to cosmopolitan taste and to its application through the decorative arts.

After having spent her childhood in a small city in Ohio and also in New Orleans, where she developed a sense of history and appreciation for preservation, Susan situated herself in New York City to pursue graduate studies.  Fortune smiled and she was able to create gorgeous homes there for herself, her family, and her friends.  She began collecting fine period English furniture and artifacts while still in her early twenties.

As a demand developed for her touch in creating interiors for acquaintances, Susan recognized the opportunity to formally offer interior design services.  She returned to the classroom, taking a certificate from the esteemed New York School of Interior Design.

Eventually Susan relocated from New York City to Washington, Connecticut, intuiting well ahead of time the trend that would bring affluence and talent to bucolic Litchfield County.  There she ensconced herself and her children in a charming house which she occupies to this day, and which she has considered through the years as her design laboratory.

Susan’s clientele have always been discerning.  Her projects have ranged geographically from Nantucket to Fort Lauderdale and beyond.  For her clients she has traveled to Europe, combed the resources of New York City and of her home county, and scoured Magazine Street for treasures.  She prides herself on her ability to tutor her clients in the historic underpinnings of style of all eras, the better to build a fundamental understanding of good design.

Susan is pleased to bring to fruition her clients’ visions for their own homes, although her execution is always filtered through her own understanding of architecture, historic styles, and a pronounced appreciation for simplicity and comfort.

The scope of Susan’s abilities is best described as interior architectural, meaning that she is happy to take any residential project from the earliest planning stages through the ultimate finished details.  She is able to design millwork & cabinetry, kitchens & bathrooms, lighting and electrical layout, and all the furniture and furnishings normally associated with decorating.
